General Rules

  1. All entries must have been produced or made since September 2010 by the exhibitor whose name appears on the entry tag. Once an entry has been exhibited in the fair, it cannot be entered again in the future.
  2. Entries are limited to residents of Brevard County and must be amateurs in the department in which they enter.
  3. All entries must have an official entry tag attached with name, address, and phone number of exhibitor.
  4. Please refer to category rules for entry deadlines and release dates. A claim check must be presenteed to redeem entries. No exhibit may be removed before release without consent of the Fair or exhibitors will forfiet any premiums. Unclaimed items become property of the Fair.
  5. An exhibitot may enter only one item per class.
  6. The Fair reserves the right to combine or divide entries to make a class.
  7. While due care will be taken with all entries, the Fair cannot be responsible for loss or damage. Precious and extremely valuable items are discouraged.
  8. Department supervisor may bar from competition entries of poor quality.
  9. The Fair office will issue awards within six weeks of the close of the Fair. Awards will be paid according to the judge's books, not from ribbons.

Divisions

4-H age divisions are as follows:

  • Cloverbuds - 5-7 years old as of September 1, 2010
  • Junior - 8-10 years old as of September 1, 2010
  • Intermediate - 11-13 years old as of September 1, 2010
  • Senior - 14-18 years old as of September 1, 2010

4-H Fashion Show

Fashions are constructed and modeled by Brevard County 4-H Youth. The contest consists of four age divisions each with different garment categories.

Dates and Showtimes

The show will be held April 2, 2011 at the Brevard County Fair, Wickham Park Pavillion.

  • Youth check in: 12:30 p.m.
  • Show starts at: 1:00 p.m.

Age Divisions

  • Cloverbuds: 5-7 years of age as of September 1, 2010. Any item sewn.
  • Junior: 8-10 years of age as of September 1, 2010. Juniors are required to construct only one clothing item (i.e. shorts, skirt, vest, simple dress, etc. in any category).
  • Intermediate: 11-13 years of age as of September 1, 2010. Intermediates must construct a complete outfit (i.e. dress, shorts and top, skirt and top).
  • Senior: 14-18 years of age as of September 1, 2010. Seniors must construct a complete ensemble entered within any category (i.e. shorts and top; jumper with blouse; complete suite, etc.)

Rules

  • Garments modeled must have been made since March 1, 2010.
  • Judging will be done by groups (division and category) and will be based ONLY on construction. Cloverbuds will not be judged.
  • Contestants must model their own garments. No premium will be given if garment is not modeled.
  • Contestants may enter only one category.
  • No commercially made garments are permitted, even if decorated.

Cloverbud categories

Any category.

Junior & Intermediate categories

  • Active Play: One or two separates made from coordinated fabrics for a total look for your favorite leisure activities. No swimwear is permitted.
  • School Wear: One, two or three garments, coordinated for a total look acceptable for school.
  • Best Wear: For girls, street length one or two-piece dress, or dress with jacket or vest suitable for daytime wear. For boys, slacks with shirts or vests suitable for daytime wear. Outfits suitable for special occasion belong in this category.
  • My Choice: Costumes, western wear, loungewear or other garments that do not fit another category.
  • Senior categories:

Senior categories

  • Active Sports Wear: Complete outfits from coordinated fabrics for a total look for your favorite leisure activities. No swimwear is permitted.
  • Informal Wear: Non-tailored, casual outfits of one or more garments, coordinated for a total look acceptable for non-formal events like school, youth activities, etc.
  • Dress for Work: Dresses, suits or tailored sportswear suitable for a business setting.
  • Special Occasion: Dressy ensembles appropriate for special occasions.
  • My Choice: Costumes, western wear, loungewear or other garments that do not fit another category.

Awards

Entries will receive ribbons based on the Brevard County Fair Fashion Revue Judges scores. Entries must be modeled in order to receive premiums. Ribbon color and premium amounts will be as follows:

90 – 100 points Blue $10.00
80 – 89 points Red $8.00
79 & below points White $5.00
Cloverbuds Participation $3.00

First Place $10.00
Second Place $7.00
Third Place $5.00

The top winners in each category will compete for rosettes within their age division. The top three (3) winners in each age division will receive rosettes, with exception to cloverbuds who are not judged.



Quilting Contest

Rules

  • Quilts must have been made since March 1, 2010 by the person entering the item.
  • Judging will be done by age groups and placed in one of two categories - Quilts (lap quilt size or larger) or Quilted items (placemats, table runner, wall hanging)
  • Quilts may be quilted or tied and must contain 3 layers, the quilted top, batting and back.
  • Cloverbuds will not be judged.
  • Contestants may enter one item in each category.
  • No commercially made quilts are permitted, even if decorated.

Horse Poster Contest

Rules

  1. A 4-H’er may submit only one entry in the Horse Poster Contest (4-H’ers may enter a second poster in the State qualifying Poster Contest).
  2. Poster theme must be horse related, preferably something learned in 4-H.
  3. All posters must be designed on or affixed to poster board whose dimensions are no larger than 14” X 22”.
  4. Posters may be horizontal or vertical.
  5. Posters submitted may be produced using any medium (i.e. watercolor, ink, crayon, acrylic, charcoal, oils, collage) providing that they are not three-dimensional.
  6. Posters incorporating copyrighted material (i.e. Snoopy, Garfield, company logos like Disney, etc.) will be disqualified, unless proof of permission is furnished.
  7. Posters using computer assistance to create components of the poster or the poster itself should affix a statement of one paragraph explaining how the computer assistance affected the poster’s composition and visual presentation.
  8. The 4-H Poster Contest Certification Statement Form must be signed by the contestant and securely attached to the back of the poster board in the upper right hand corner.
  9. Youth’s name, age and county must be clearly printed on the back of ALL submitted materials.
  10. Please note the judging form for rules and criteria.
  11. Posters will be automatically disqualified for any of the following reasons:
    • Inappropriate size and/or mounted material.
    • Incomplete or illegible certification statements and/or not securely attached and visible without unfolding or removing from envelopes.
    • Name, age, and county not clearly printed on the back.
    • Use of copyrighted materials, without written permission.
    • Three-dimensional posters.
    • Inappropriate use of the 4-H Emblem. Check 4-H Web site for guidelines.
    • Use of computer-generated components without a statement regarding this affect.
    • Posters containing inappropriate content.


4-H Photography Contest

FLORIDA 4-H PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT CERTIFICATION STATEMENT

Participation Criteria

Participants in this event must be Brevard County 4-H members.

Rules

  1. A 4-H’er may submit one entry in the Photography Contest
  2. Only prints may be submitted for the exhibit.
  3. Digital photos should be entered in ONLY Division 2. All Division 2 entries must include a print. Division 2 entries must fill out a statement on the certification form about electronic manipulation of the image. Participant must include all steps used to change photo.
  4. Youth’s name, age, county, division & class numbers must be clearly printed on the back of ALL submitted materials.
  5. Photo entries may be either black/white or color when processed from negatives, a digital camera or slides.
  6. Pictures should depict activities typical of those in which 4-H members and their friends would likely participate.
  7. All photos must be mounted on a mat or foam core. No other mounted material will be considered.
  8. Single prints (Class A) do not need to be mounted for the county contest.
  9. Maximum size for a single photo is 8” X 10”, not including mounting: 12” X 14” when mounted. Maximum size for the mounted series is 16” X 20”.
  10. Fill out and securely attach the Florida 4-H Photography Exhibit Certification Statement form to the back of the photo. Refrain from writing on the photo.

Divisions

Division 1 – Print

  • Class A: Color or Black and White Print – Single Print
  • Class B: Color or Black and White Print – Series (up to 10 photos per series)

Division 2 – Digital

  • Class A: Digital Photo – Single Image (minimal or no manipulation)
  • Class B: Digital Photo - Series of Images (up to 10 images per series, and minimal or no manipulation)
  • Class C: Creative Digital Photo – Single image
  • Class D: Creative Digital Photo – (up to 10 images per series)

Scoring and Awards

  • Cloverbuds will not be judged, but will recieve a participation ribbon.
  • Junior, Intermediate and Senior entries will be judged separately.

The top three winners will be named for Junior, Intermediate, & Senior, for each class.

  • These will advance on to state competition and must be mounted and follow the 4-H State photography contest rules.
  • In order to participate in the state contest, the winners must be returned to the 4-H office ready to mail by May 1, 2010.

Rules

  1. A 4-H’er may submit only one entry in the Game Board Contest.
  2. Maximum size for gameboards will be 15”x20”, minimum 14”x20”
  3. Gameboards must have a 9 volt battery attached to the center of the back of the board.
  4. Gameboards may be painted, drawn with pencils or markers, or utilized by any other craft technique. Fresh materials that will not hold up for the duration of the Fair may not be used.
  5. Boards may be 3 dimensional; however, they must not have sharp objects sticking out or pieces attached that may be removed or fall off. Superintendents have a final say over safety.
  6. If constructed of brown cardboard, the front of the gameboard must be covered with poster board, wallpaper, contact paper or other similar materials Punch holes on top corners of gameboards in order to hang.
  7. Gameboard must have a “Gameboard Project Entry Tag” attached to the front of the board. Participants should complete their own entry tags. Tags are available from their County 4-h Office. Gameboards without entry tags will not be judged for awards.
  8. Judging will be determined by criteria set on judging sheet.
  9. Gameboards must be entered into one of the following project categories:


    • Animal science – poultry, rabbits, dogs, cats, horses, beef, dairy, sheep, goats, swine, small animals, and Veterinary Science.
    • Citizenship, Leadership, and Career Development – career development, work force preparation, citizenship, community service, leadership.
    • Individual and Family Resources – clothing, consumer education, foods and nutrition, safety, health, human development, home environment, money management, emergency preparedness.
    • Science and Technology – rocketry, automotive, computer, small engines, electricity, robotics, aerospace, bicyle.
    • Communication and Expressive Arts – communication arts, media arts, leisure arts, recreation, public speaking, performing and theatre arts, woodworking.
    • Environmental Education – aquatic, marine, ecology, water quality, natural resources, forestry, wildlife, gardening, plant projects, recycling, energy, outdoor education, entomology, sport fishing, shooting sports.
  10. Gameboards will be automatically disqualified for any of the following reasons: Automatic Disqualification


    • Inappropriate size and/or mounted material.
    • Name, age, and county not clearly printed on the back.
    • Use of copyrighted materials, without written permission.

Project Display Contest

Participation Criteria

Participants in this event must be Brevard County 4-H’ers.

Rules

  1. Refer to General Rules and Guidelines for the Brevard County Fair.
  2. A 4-H’er (as an individual or a team) may submit only one entry in the Project Display Contest. Teams consist of 2 or more individuals.
  3. Project displays may abide by any 4-H project related theme. The exhibit may be three dimensional, free standing or a miniature scene showing something learned or experienced while working on a project.
  4. All project displays display boards must fall within the following dimensions: occupy a space no larger than 36” high X 24” wide X 12” deep.
  5. Project displays submitted may be produced using any medium (i.e. watercolor, ink, crayon, acrylic, charcoal, oils, collage).
  6. Project displays incorporating copyrighted material (i.e. Snoopy, Garfield, company logos like Disney, etc.) will be disqualified, unless proof of permission is furnished.
  7. Project displays using computer assistance to create components of the display or the display itself should affix a statement of one paragraph explaining how the computer assistance affected the project display’s composition and visual presentation.
  8. The 4-H Project Display Certification Statement Form must be signed by the contestant(s) and turned into the extension office by February 22nd with the display.

  10. Project displays will be automatically disqualified for any of the following reasons: Automatic Disqualification

4-H Poultry Show

*Please note that this event is open to 4-H youth who is a Brevard County resident or a Brevard County 4-Her.

Poultry will be on exhibit from the start of the fair, March 31 through April 10, 5pm. All birds must be picked up no later than 7pm. All exhibitors are asked to help break down the cages from the show directly upon release of their birds. Those birds not picked up by 7pm will become property of the Brevard County 4-H Poultry Club.

  • Fee:$2 per bird entered, Cloverbuds are exempt from $2.00 fee.

Rules

  1. Exhibitors must comply with General Fair rules and regulations and animal health regulations for exhibition.
  2. All youth exhibiting in the 4-H Poultry Show are recommended to have taken the Animal Ethics and Care class taught by a qualified state and/or county representative.
  3. Registration forms will be available through the Brevard County Extension office. You may call 321-633-1702, visit http://brevard.ifas.ufl.edu/, or email Vspero@ufl .edu. You may also contact your 4-H leader for a registration form.
  4. All poultry exhibitors must have a “Statement of Origin” indicating their bird is from a Pullorum-Typhoid free flock or birds will be subjected to testing at check-in.
  5. Birds will not be accepted which are infected with or showing any clinical signs of an infectious or communicable disease, or are infected with lice and/or mites.
  6. Birds must be clean and free of stains, bright of eye, in full feather and in show worthy condition. Dirty birds and birds in poor condition will be rejected.
  7. Judging will be done according to the American Standards of Perfection and according to the Danish System.
  8. The fair reserves the right to combine breeds for competition in order to make a competitive class.
  9. Exhibitor may not exhibit more than five birds of any one variety with a maximum of 30 birds per exhibitor.
  10. Each coop will be marked with an entry tag, which will carry the name of the exhibitor, breed, age, gender and entry number of the bird.
  11. Upon arriving, the exhibitors will house their own birds under the supervision of the show superintendent.
  12. During the Fair, no bird may be removed except by order of the superintendent.
  13. Exhibitors will maintain a clean and attractive display area. All personal items are to be kept under the exhibit and out of site.
  14. Animals must be fed, watered and have their respective cages cleaned each day.
  15. Exhibitors will schedule through the show superintendent to take turns cleaning quarters, feeding, and watering.
  16. No “FOR SALE” signs will be permitted on cages. A bulletin area will be provided for this purpose. No birds may be sold and removed before official release date and time!
  17. Premium checks will be mailed to the exhibitor.
  18. Record books are due Wednesday, March 30, 2011, 7-9pm. Record books received after this deadline will receive a 10-point deduction for each day it is late.
  19. All participants must be under the direct supervision of an adult leader at all times.
  20. Points will be earned toward Champion Exhibitor Award through Poultry Skill-A-Thon, Poultry Poster Contest, Egg Decorating Contest, Poultry Photo Contest, Record Book, demonstration, and Ask-me booth participation at the fair.
  21. Educational and show information will be disbursed and discussed at the club meetings.

Skill-A-Thon

A “Skill-A-Thon” is an event where exhibitors can demonstrate their knowledge on poultry. These topics will be based on the 2010 Florida State Fair Skill-a-Thon study guide. Please refer to the following website and make sure to preview the 2010 guide: http://floridastatefair.com/content/view/40/39/. Top 3 scores will accumulate points for Champion Exhibitor competition (1st=15, 2nd=10, 3rd=5).

Showmanship

Presenting one of your birds to the judge in an appropriate style of handling as well as showing a general knowledge of poultry is required. Top 3 scores in each age division will accumulate points for Champion Exhibitor competition (1st=20, 2nd=15, 3rd=10).

Crowing Contests

The rooster that crows the most number of times in 10 minutes wins!

Egg Decorating Contest

Decorate a hardboiled or blown egg in any creative, imaginative design. One entry per participant. Each entrant participating in this contest will earn 5 points for the Champion Exhibitor contest.

Photo Contest

Take photos of your chickens. Photos MUST be framed or mounted by the participant or they will not be accepted. Limit of five entries per participant with a maximum framed or mounted size of 11x14. These photos will not be considered for the Florida State Photography Contest. Exhibitors may turn in duplicates to the 4-H Photography Contest in order for submission to the State Photography Contest. Please be aware of those deadlines as they are different from the Poultry Photo Contest. Each entrant participating in this contest will earn 5 points for the Champion Exhibitor contest.

Poster Contest

Make a project poster teaching something about your poultry project experience. Poster must be on standard sized poster board or foam core. Entrant must write name on back of poster. Each entrant participating in this contest will earn 10 points for the Champion Exhibitor contest.

Demonstration

This does not have to be poultry related. A 3-7 minute demonstration on a 4-H related topic must be given. Each entrant participating in this contest will earn 10 points for the Champion Exhibitor contest.

Ask-me Booth

Youth will sit for one hour times slots (sign up during poultry check in) for a maximum of 5 hours on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Youth will answer questions related to poultry that fair attendants may have.

The Champion Exhibitor and 1st and 2nd Runners-up awards are given to the three youth who achieved the highest scores based on the accumulation of points outlined in the point scale below. Animal placement scores will be arrived at by an average of placing.



4-H Youth Heifer Show

*Please note that this event is open to 4-H youth who fit into either one of the following categories: Brevard County resident or Brevard County 4-Her

Heifers will be on exhibit the first weekend of the fair, March 31 through March April 3, 7pm. During the weekend of April 8 through April 10 there will be non 4-H cattle on display.

  • Registration deadline: Monday, February 7, 2011
  • Arrival at fair and check-in: Wednesday, March 30, 2011, 7-9pm
  • Heifer show: Sunday, April 3, 2011, 2pm
  • Heifers released: Sunday, April 3, 2011 by 9pm

Rules

  1. Refer to the General Fair rules.
  2. All youth exhibiting in the 4-H Heifer Show are recommended to have taken the Animal Ethics and Care class taught by a qualified state and/or county representative.
  3. Registration forms will available through the Brevard County Extension office. You may call 321-633-1702, visit http://brevard.ifas.ufl.edu/, or email Vspero@ufl.edu. You may also contact your 4-H leader for a registration form.
  4. All animals must be halter broken to lead.
  5. Animals must be properly fitted.
  6. Each exhibitor is responsible for the care and feeding of the animal, including during the fair.
  7. Each exhibitor may enter and show no more than two (2) animals in a class.
  8. Exhibitors must wear the appropriate 4-H attire: dark pants, white shirt, and something green to represent 4-H (ex: scarf, bolo tie, green ribbon, patch, etc.). Caps and hats are permitted. Closed toe shoes or boots are required.
  9. All vehicles transporting livestock for exhibition in Florida must be cleaned and disinfected prior to loading.
  10. Health papers: all animals are required to have an Official Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (OCVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian in the state unless exempted. Prior to acceptance at the Fair, all animals must be visually inspected by a Florida veterinarian or by a Department of Agriculture representative for the required identification of the animals, clinical signs of disease, and evidence of compliance with test requirements. Any animals which have clinical signs of contagious or infectious diseases on visual inspection or any animal which is known to be exposed must be:
    1. Withdrawn from the Fair and returned to the place of origin.
    2. Examined at the owner’s expense within 24 hours by a veterinarian licensed in the State of Florida who certifies by a signed written statement that the animal is free of contagious or infectious disease.
  11. All participants must be under the direct supervision of an adult leader at all times.
  12. Educational and show information will be disbursed and discussed at the club meetings.
  13. Additional assistance on the project is always available from the Extension Agent and the club leaders!
  14. Animals will be a minimum of 6 months. Specific divisions will be determined at the fair based on entries and sections by animal birth date.
  15. Premium checks will be mailed to the exhibitor.

Showmanship

Presenting your heifer to the judge in an appropriate style of handling as well as showing a general knowledge of heifers is required.
